Ramen in Nakano
Nakano is a ramen landmark twice over: tsukemen's origin story begins here, and a 1990s shop made the double soup a national trend.

Nakano ward, just west of Shinjuku, is known for Nakano Broadway, the shopping complex full of anime and collectors' shops, and for a ramen history out of proportion to its size. In the 1950s, Kazuo Yamagishi, then cooking at a Taishoken shop in Nakano, served noodles with a separate dipping broth as a staff meal turned menu item. He called it morisoba, and he later popularised it at his own shop in Ikebukuro. That's the usual origin story for tsukemen.
Decades later, in the 1990s, a Nakano shop became famous for a double soup, blending a pork-and-chicken stock with a seafood stock made from dried fish. Shops across Tokyo followed, and the combination of animal and seafood stocks is now everywhere. Today Nakano's ramen is clustered around Nakano Station's north exit and the Sun Mall arcade leading to Nakano Broadway, with Higashi-Nakano and Arai adding local counters.
