Ramen in Suginami
Suginami is home to Ogikubo ramen: a clear soy and dried-sardine chuka soba that made the neighbourhood a ramen destination.

Suginami ward, on Tokyo's western Chuo Line, is a residential area of small neighbourhoods: Ogikubo, Asagaya, Koenji and Nishi-Ogikubo. Ogikubo became one of Tokyo's best-known ramen towns in the 1980s and 1990s, when television and magazines made its shops famous. The style associated with it is old-fashioned Tokyo chuka soba: a clear, soy-seasoned broth of chicken or pork with niboshi (dried sardines) and other dried seafood, curly noodles, and simple toppings of chashu, menma and green onion. Some of the shops that made Ogikubo's name have served it since the postwar years.
Koenji, with its live-music bars and secondhand shops, and Asagaya add plenty of newer counters, from rich tonkotsu-gyokai to tsukemen. Suginami is a good place to see everyday Tokyo ramen away from the big stations, and the Chuo Line makes it easy to hop between neighbourhoods. An Ogikubo noodle shop from the late 1940s, the root of a family of shops that includes Tokyo's Taishoken. Its tsukesoba, noodles with a separate sweet-sour soy dip, is one of the early forms of tsukemen.
