Udon in Takamatsu
Takamatsu is the capital of udon country: Kagawa, the prefecture that eats more udon than anywhere in Japan.
Soupmap lists 170 udon places in Takamatsu, Kagawa.
Kagawa, Japan's smallest prefecture, calls itself the udon prefecture, and Takamatsu is its capital and main gateway. The local noodle is Sanuki udon, named after the old province: thick, square-edged wheat noodles with koshi, a firm, springy bite that comes from kneading (traditionally by foot) and resting the dough. People here eat udon for breakfast and lunch, and the city has hundreds of udon shops, from self-service counters near offices to rural noodle factories that serve bowls on the side.
Udon shops in Kagawa keep unusual hours: many open early in the morning and close in the early afternoon, or when the noodles run out. For first-timers, self-service (serufu) shops are the most local experience: you order your noodles, warm them yourself, add toppings and tempura from the counter, and pay at the end. Kagawa even has udon taxis, which drive visitors between shops. See the Sanuki udon in Takamatsu list for shops named for the style, read Sanuki udon: a whole prefecture built on a bite, and see the neighbouring Marugame guide.

About this guide
Built from Soupmap's catalog: our own selections plus open-data listings from Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap contributors. Open-data listings are reported locations, not independently checked; menus, prices, hours and current trading status are not verified. Styles come from shop names, so a place can serve more than its name says, or less.
Places are grouped by the municipality in their record. English municipality names come from official kana readings (localgovjp, CC0). Generated romanizations of shop names are approximate; the Japanese name is kept on every card. Sources and credits.
