Udon in Marugame
Marugame is Sanuki udon country beside an original castle keep, and a reminder that the famous chain named after it began elsewhere.
Soupmap lists 42 udon places in Marugame, Kagawa.
Marugame, west of Takamatsu on the Kagawa coast, is a town of udon shops in the heart of Sanuki udon country: firm, square-cut noodles in a light iriko (dried sardine) dashi, served from early morning to early afternoon, often self-service. Many visitors know the name from Marugame Seimen, the nationwide udon chain, but the chain was founded in Kakogawa, in Hyogo Prefecture; the name is a tribute to the town, not a sign of where it started. The udon in Marugame itself is mostly small, local shops.
The town has two other draws. Marugame Castle keeps one of the twelve original castle keeps surviving in Japan, small but perched high on stone walls. And the town is known for honetsuki-dori, a whole chicken leg roasted on the bone with pepper and garlic, often eaten with beer in the evening, after the udon shops have closed. The Kotohira-gu shrine (Konpira-san) is a short train ride inland. Read Sanuki udon: a whole prefecture built on a bite and see Udon in Takamatsu for the capital.

About this guide
Built from Soupmap's catalog: our own selections plus open-data listings from Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap contributors. Open-data listings are reported locations, not independently checked; menus, prices, hours and current trading status are not verified. Styles come from shop names, so a place can serve more than its name says, or less.
Places are grouped by the municipality in their record. English municipality names come from official kana readings (localgovjp, CC0). Generated romanizations of shop names are approximate; the Japanese name is kept on every card. Sources and credits.
