Ramen in Taito
Taito ward is where Tokyo ramen began: Asakusa's Rairaiken opened in 1910, and Ueno and Okachimachi still feed the crowds today.

Taito ward covers Asakusa, Ueno and Okachimachi, the old shitamachi (downtown) of Tokyo, and it holds an important place in ramen history. In 1910 a restaurant called Rairaiken opened in Asakusa, serving Chinese-style noodles in a soy-seasoned broth to Japanese customers. It's often described as Tokyo's first ramen shop of its kind, and its clear, brown shoyu bowl set the pattern for Tokyo chuka soba. The original closed long ago, but the style it popularised is still served all over the ward.
Today Asakusa's ramen sits among tempura houses, soba shops and the crowds visiting Senso-ji temple. Ueno and Okachimachi, around the Ameyoko market under the railway tracks, have busy, inexpensive counters for shoppers and museum-goers, and Uguisudani and Iriya add neighbourhood shops.
