Soba in Taito
Asakusa and Ueno keep old Tokyo soba alive: traditional houses near Senso-ji, cold seiro soba, and long queues on New Year's Eve.

Taito ward, Tokyo's old downtown, is one of the city's soba heartlands. Around Asakusa's Senso-ji temple and Ueno's park and station, soba houses have served buckwheat noodles to visitors and shopkeepers for generations, and some belong to the Yabu family of shops known for their strong, salty dipping sauce. Edo-style soba is usually eaten cold, on a bamboo tray (seiro or zaru), dipped in a dark sauce, with soba-yu, the noodle water, to finish. Hot bowls such as kake soba and tempura soba are on every menu too, and in old houses you'll see customers enjoying sake with small dishes like grilled seaweed or tamagoyaki.
On New Year's Eve, queues form outside Asakusa's soba houses for toshikoshi soba, the noodles eaten to see the year out; long, thin noodles stand for a long life. The ward's soba shops cluster around Kaminarimon, Kappabashi and the streets near Ueno Station and Ameyoko.
