Ramen in Wakayama
Wakayama calls its ramen chuka soba: a pork-and-soy broth, pressed mackerel sushi on the counter, and boiled eggs you count yourself.
Soupmap lists 78 ramen places in Wakayama.
Wakayama's ramen became nationally famous in the late 1990s, after a local shop appeared on a television ramen contest, but it had been the city's everyday food for decades before that. Locals call it chuka soba. There are two broad families. One, often called shako-mae after an old tram depot that a famous shop stood in front of, is a clearer soy broth. The other, the style that made the city famous, is tonkotsu-shoyu: pork bones boiled hard and seasoned with soy, rich and brown, with thin straight noodles.
What visitors remember is the counter. Wakayama shops traditionally set out hayazushi, small packets of pressed mackerel sushi, and boiled eggs; you help yourself while you wait or with your bowl, and tell the staff how many you had when you pay. The city sits at the mouth of the Kinokawa river, an hour or so from Osaka, and makes an easy day trip. About this guide
Built from Soupmap's catalog: our own selections plus open-data listings from Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap contributors. Open-data listings are reported locations, not independently checked; menus, prices, hours and current trading status are not verified. Styles come from shop names, so a place can serve more than its name says, or less.
Places are grouped by the municipality in their record. English municipality names come from official kana readings (localgovjp, CC0). Generated romanizations of shop names are approximate; the Japanese name is kept on every card. Sources and credits.
