Ramen in Osaka
Osaka has no single ramen style, but it has everything else: Japan's biggest ramen list on Soupmap, and the city where instant ramen was born nearby.
Soupmap lists 688 ramen places in Osaka. Most are in Chuo and Kita.
Osaka is better known for udon, okonomiyaki and takoyaki than for one signature ramen, and that is what makes its ramen scene interesting: without a house style to defend, shops here range freely from clear shio and chicken paitan to rich tonkotsu, niboshi and tsukemen. The city has a long tradition of Chinese-style chuka soba too. Bowls cluster in Umeda around Osaka Station, in Namba and the Dotonbori canal district, along Tenjimbashi-suji, one of Japan's longest shopping streets, and around Tennoji.
Osaka also has a claim on modern ramen history. In 1958 Momofuku Ando created the first instant noodles, Chicken Ramen, in Ikeda, a city just north of Osaka, where a museum about cup noodles now stands. With 688 places, this is the longest ramen list in the Soupmap catalog, so the map and catalog search are the easiest ways to find bowls near where you're staying.
