Oden in Shizuoka
Shizuoka oden is dark and skewered: a beef-sinew broth, black hanpen fish cake, and a dusting of fish powder and green seaweed.
Soupmap lists 9 oden places in Shizuoka. Most are in Aoi and Suruga.
Shizuoka has one of Japan's most distinctive oden styles. The broth is dark, made with beef sinew and soy, and topped up rather than replaced, so it deepens over time. Everything is served on skewers, including kuro hanpen, a grey-black fish cake made from whole sardines or mackerel that's Shizuoka's signature piece. Before eating, you sprinkle each skewer with dashi-ko, powdered dried fish, and aonori, green seaweed flakes. The pieces are priced individually, and you count your skewers at the end.
The city's oden culture is everywhere: in izakaya, at standing counters, and traditionally at dagashi-ya, old-fashioned candy shops where children bought skewers after school. Downtown, the Aoba Oden-gai and Aoba Yokocho alleys near the Aoba Symbol Road are lined with small oden bars. Shizuoka oden is often eaten year-round, not just in winter. About this guide
Built from Soupmap's catalog: our own selections plus open-data listings from Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap contributors. Open-data listings are reported locations, not independently checked; menus, prices, hours and current trading status are not verified. Styles come from shop names, so a place can serve more than its name says, or less.
Places are grouped by the municipality in their record. English municipality names come from official kana readings (localgovjp, CC0). Generated romanizations of shop names are approximate; the Japanese name is kept on every card. Sources and credits.
