Udon in Kiryu
Kiryu's noodle is himokawa udon: ribbons of udon so wide and thin they look like sheets, served cold with dipping sauce or hot in broth.
Soupmap lists 14 udon places in Kiryu, Gunma.
Kiryu, in Gunma Prefecture north of Tokyo, was one of Japan's great silk-weaving towns, and its signature noodle is as distinctive as its fabrics. Himokawa udon is wheat dough rolled thin and cut into very wide, flat ribbons, often several centimetres across and sometimes much wider, so a single noodle can cover a plate. The texture is smooth and slippery, with a gentle chew, and the wide surface carries a lot of sauce. It's served cold with a dipping sauce in summer and hot in a soy-dashi broth in winter, sometimes with tempura on the side.
The town has promoted himokawa as a local speciality, and udon shops in Kiryu serve it alongside regular udon and soba. Kiryu's old weaving houses and sawtooth-roofed factories make it a pleasant day trip from Tokyo. Gunma is also known for Mizusawa udon, near Shibukawa, which sometimes appears in the popular argument over Japan's three great udon. About this guide
Built from Soupmap's catalog: our own selections plus open-data listings from Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap contributors. Open-data listings are reported locations, not independently checked; menus, prices, hours and current trading status are not verified. Styles come from shop names, so a place can serve more than its name says, or less.
Places are grouped by the municipality in their record. English municipality names come from official kana readings (localgovjp, CC0). Generated romanizations of shop names are approximate; the Japanese name is kept on every card. Sources and credits.
