Soba in Morioka
Morioka's soba is a game: wanko soba, small mouthfuls tossed into your bowl one after another until you close the lid.
Soupmap lists 8 soba places in Morioka, Iwate.
Morioka, the capital of Iwate in northern Tohoku, is known for wanko soba, one of the most playful ways to eat noodles in Japan. Servers stand by your table with a tray of tiny portions of hot soba in broth, each about a mouthful, and flick a new one into your small lacquered bowl the moment you've finished the last, calling out to encourage you. The meal goes on until you put the lid on your bowl. Shops keep count, often with a stack of empty bowls, and some hand out certificates for passing a hundred. The custom is usually linked to the region's tradition of hospitality, serving guests until they can't eat any more.
Wanko soba is one of Morioka's three famous noodles, with jajamen (thick noodles with a miso meat sauce, influenced by Chinese zhajiangmian) and Morioka reimen (chewy cold noodles in a beef broth with kimchi). It is also listed among Japan's three great soba with Togakushi and Izumo. Read Soba: a beginner's guide to buckwheat noodles for the basics before you start counting bowls.

About this guide
Built from Soupmap's catalog: our own selections plus open-data listings from Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap contributors. Open-data listings are reported locations, not independently checked; menus, prices, hours and current trading status are not verified. Styles come from shop names, so a place can serve more than its name says, or less.
Places are grouped by the municipality in their record. English municipality names come from official kana readings (localgovjp, CC0). Generated romanizations of shop names are approximate; the Japanese name is kept on every card. Sources and credits.
